Trio SŌRA

A bird that sings as it takes flight’ – or to put it more succinctly: Sōra! Native American by origin, but also meaning ‘sky’ in Japanese, this poetic name that travels the world and sings in every language also makes us think of the word ‘sisters’ (sorority, from Latin soror), and is therefore a perfect fit for a trio of young women founded in 2015. It was in 2022 that the current line-up was born, when Fanny Fheodoroff, a Viennese violinist who graduated from The Juilliard School, joined pianist Pauline Chenais and cellist Angèle Legasa, who have been friends with shared affinities ever since studying together at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSM).

Trio Sōra's first disc, a triple album devoted to the complete Beethoven trios (Naïve - November 2020), imposes its resolutely modern style and interpretations that are as free as they are rigorous; unanimously acclaimed by the press (The Strad, les Echos, Gramophone, Deutschlandfunk Kultur...), it receives the most coveted awards - Choc Classica of the year 2021, Times Best Classical Music Album of the year 2020, Top Mezzo, Tak1 Gold. Their version of the Op.70 Trio No.2 “Les Esprits” was voted best performance on France Musique's “La Tribune des critiques de disque” program.

Their second recording, that was released in April 2024 was dedicated to all Brahms trios and was also hailed for their interpretations by acclaimed critics from Choc Classica (May 2024), Trophées Radio Classique or Coup de coeur France Info TV.

Artist in residence at the Fondation Singer-Polignac, the Trio Sōra has performed on the most prestigious stages: London's Wigmore Hall, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, the Verbier Festival, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Auditorium du Louvre, the Folle Journée de Nantes, Palau de la Musica and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. The Auditorium de Radio-France hosted a major project of the musicians: the creation in February 2022 of a triple concerto commissioned from Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy, with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Mikko Franck.

Honored with numerous international competition awards - Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, Hans Gal Prize, Laureates HSBC of the Aix-en-Provence Festival Academy, Special Prize of the Verbier Festival Academy, Parkhouse Award, Laureates of the Charles Oulmont Prize -, the Trio Sōra has benefited for several years from collaborations with great masters such as Mathieu Herzog, András Schiff, Menahem Pressler, the Ebene Quartet and the Artemis Quartet during his residency in Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel.

Fanny Fheodoroff plays an Omobono Stradivarius (1738-9) and Angèle Legasa a Giulius Cesare Gigli cello (1767), instruments generously lent by the Boubo-Music Foundation.
